What Sets a Rosé of Pinot Noir Apart

We’ll be honest: Pinot Noir can be a headache in the vineyard. On our Bennett Valley estate, these are the issues we watch most closely each year:

  • Thin skins. Too much sun and the berries burn; too much moisture and rot can set in.
  • It ripens early, so there’s not much time to adjust if the forecast turns.
  • A short heat wave right before picking can send sugar levels up while the flavors lag behind.

So why bother? Because in the years when everything lines up, the wine makes up for it.

Here’s something many people don’t realize: rosé isn’t a mix of red and white wine. It’s made from red grapes that are simply handled differently in the cellar.

  • The grapes are crushed, and the juice picks up color from the skins for a short while.
  • Then the juice is drained off and ferments without the grape skins.
  • Red wine keeps its skins in the tank for days or weeks, and that’s where its dark color and tannin come from.

Pinot Noir skins don’t carry a lot of color in the first place. So a Pinot Noir rosé usually ends up a soft, pale pink, and it tastes like fresh red berries.

Compared with rosé from Grenache or Syrah, which can be rounder and riper, Pinot Noir rosé feels lighter in the mouth. It’s still flavorful, though. If you like a wine that stays refreshing through a long lunch, the best Pinot Noir rosé is worth a try.

Bennett Valley: Home of Our Sonoma Rosé of Pinot Noir

Zeka Vineyards traces back to Burgundy. Louisa and Lorenz traveled there, fell in love with its Pinot Noir, and came home wanting to make wine in that style.

In 2006, they found a 2.5-acre property in Bennett Valley, just outside Santa Rosa. Volcanic soil, cool ocean breezes: it checked the boxes.

Louisa didn’t stop at a gut feeling, though. She hired a soil scientist, who studied the soils and microclimates on the property and even ran a forward-looking climate analysis.

His verdict? Pinot Noir would do well here. Evening fog cools the property, valley oaks surround the vines, and a seasonal creek flows from Annadel State Park to the Matanzas Creek Reservoir.

Today the vineyard has five blocks, each sitting on its own type of soil. Louisa planted three Pinot Noir clones there: Calera, Dijon 777, and Pommard. She picked them for nuance and balance.

Our crew farms each block separately and hand-picks every cluster, and we think you can taste that care in our Sonoma rosé of Pinot Noir.

The People Behind the Bottle

Louisa makes our wines with winemaker Patrick Saboe. They share the view that good wine can’t be hurried. In practice, that means pruning to keep yields low, picking by hand when the grapes are in balance, and making cellar decisions that keep the focus on the fruit.

These methods were developed for our Pinot Noir, and we followed the same approach for the rosé. For the 2024 vintage, we wanted a wine that clearly belongs alongside our reds, just lighter and fresher.

Meet the 2024 Bennett Valley Single Vineyard Rosé of Pinot Noir

This is the first rosé our family has ever bottled, and every grape in it came from our own vines. Once fermentation finished, we let the wine rest for five months in stainless steel and neutral French oak.

The steel keeps the fruit tasting fresh. Because the oak is neutral, it doesn’t add an oaky flavor; it simply gives the wine a bit more texture.

Pour a glass, and you’ll see a pale salmon color. On the nose, there’s strawberry and something floral. Take a sip and the strawberry comes back, with watermelon and a little apricot behind it. The acidity is lively, and it’s the reason you’ll want a second sip.

We made just 75 cases of the 2024. A 750 ml bottle costs $23, which we think is amazing for a single-vineyard wine of this quality. So if you’re planning to buy rosé of Pinot Noir online this season, it’s best not to wait too long.

Choosing the Best Pinot Noir Rosé

If you’re comparing rosés, a few things are worth checking:

  • A single-vineyard wine shows you what one piece of ground tastes like, rather than a blend from many sites.
  • Good rosé has enough acidity to taste fresh, and fruit that’s ripe without being heavy.
  • Brief skin contact and gentle aging help the wine keep its delicate aromas.
  • Small lots usually mean someone has paid attention at every stage.

Our 2024 rosé meets each of these marks. That is why we feel it stands among the best Pinot Noir rosé wines from California.

How to Serve and Pair It

Serve this rosé well chilled. It is a perfect choice on a warm day. Enjoy it at a garden lunch, a beach picnic, or a calm night at home.

One practical tip: take the bottle out of the fridge about fifteen minutes before you pour. Straight from the fridge, the aromas are muted. As it warms slightly toward 50°F, the strawberry and floral notes open up. An ordinary white wine glass works perfectly, and there’s no need to decant.

Its crisp taste and red fruit flavors go well with many foods. We suggest:

  • Soft, fresh cheese, such as goat cheese, burrata or young Brie
  • A fine board of cured meats
  • Shellfish, such as shrimp, oysters, crab and scallops
  • Grilled salmon or a simple Niçoise salad
  • Roasted summer vegetables with olive oil and fresh herbs

It is just as good on its own, poured for guests as they arrive. Rosé is made to be enjoyed young, so there’s no reason to save it for a special occasion. We’d suggest opening the 2024 within the next year or two, while the fruit is at its brightest. If you don’t finish the bottle, recork it and keep it in the fridge for a day or two.
